WEEK FIVE, October 20-24, 2014:
Turn in journals this week.
Review Instructor Interview Project, get a partner (or not), and turn in a plan after first choosing three possible instructors (two back-ups).
Contact and make a plan with an instructor.
Learn about different types of planning strategies for essay writing.
Learn how to take apart and respond to a prompt.
Write an introductory paragraph in response to a prompt and as part of a longer essay project.
Begin an essay.
MONDAY:
*Turn in the Scavenger Hunt. Correct in class.
*Turn in "The Lottery" Assignment and go over answers together.
* Take "The Lottery" vocabulary test. (http://quizlet.com/41825220/test).
* Introduction of the essay format. Basic concepts: introduction, body, conclusion, topic sentence, supporting detail, grabber, closer, thesis, topic.
* Review a prompt or determine an appropriate topic. * Determine your purpose for writing (entertain, inform, explain,convince).
*Look at models of essays written in five paragraph format.
HOMEWORK:
*Organize your journal and bring it to turn in tomorrow or Wednesday.
TUESDAY:
* Write a 9 minute journal entry on this topic: "Tell about a the joys and the frustrations you have had becoming a college student:"
* Turn in your journal today or tomorrow. Fold over pages that you do not want the instructor to read.
* Go to The College Readiness tab on the website. Scroll to the last tab,
"Instructor Interview Project." Get assignment. Then determine if you want to work in a pair or by yourself. Use these files, also under the Instructor Interview Project tab.

HOMEWORK:
* Look at the Fall Quarter Schedule to find an instructor to interview by going online to www.spscc.edu to "Current Schedule." Find the class and instructor for your project. Find two "back-up" instructors. Call or email your top choice with your polite request to meet with them and to attend an hour of the class you want to observe. On Friday you will report to your instructor about who you have contacted and what your plan is.
WEDNESDAY:
*Turn in journals.
*Instructor Interview Project: Continue to look online at the courses offered this quarter. Go to "Current Schedule" for Fall 2014 at www.spscc.edu. Put in appropriate screening information. Find one instructor and class. Get the instructor's name, phone, email. Get two more instructors and classes as back-ups. Contact the first instructor by email and by phone (outside of class). You can use the following script or modify it:

*Look at various types of planning styles--mind-mapping (brainstorming, spidering), outline, lists, journaling, combinations.
* Lecture: What is a prompt? *What are the elements of a strong essay introductory paragraph? *View models of introductory paragraphs.
*Using one of the methods of planning, plan for an introductory paragraph for the following prompt:
Working for a while at a low paying, physically challenging job can be/isn't educational and/or benefitical to a person.
* Write a draft of an introductory paragraph with at least four sentences and with three supports. Due Friday.

*Complete the Planning for Writing Assignment--due Friday.
*Complete the Introductory Paragraph Assignment--due Friday.

* Planning for Writing Assignment--due tomorrow. Make a mind-map, an outline, or a detailed planning list to pre-plan a five paragraph essay for one of the prompts listed in the file above
*Work on Planning for Writing Assignment, due tomorrow--15 minutes.
*Complete and write out the following information:
Instructor Interview partner (if any); your first, second, and third choice instructors/classes you have chosen to attend. Turn this in tomorrow on a single sheet of paper with your (and your partner's) names. Turn in only one sheet for a pair of partners.
*Using your planning for writing work, write a draft of a strong first supporting paragraph following the topic of your introduction. Include three details.
HOMEWORK:

to turn in tomorrow.
*Complete paragraph one (Introduction) for your essay to use tomorrow in class.
*Contact your first choice instructor and establish a date and time that you can interview them: use the script given by the instructor and modify it, as needed. Establish that you can attend a class at a specific time and date. Get ready for the interiew by writing new and additional questions.
If the instructor has not replied by a third school day, go to your second choice BUT politely inform (email or call) the first choice instructor that due to the approaching deadline for the project, you have had to make other plans.
FRIDAY:
* Turn in Planning for Writing Assignment.
* Turn in Introductory Paragraph--it is checked off as complete.
* Turn in your plan for your Instructor Interview with your partner's name, 3 instructors and their three classes.
* Overview of the support paragraphs and their order. All relates to the work you have done on the Introductory paragraph.
HOMEWORK:
* Complete your second paragraph for the essay for Monday.
* Call and/or email a second choice instructor if the first did not answer you in a three day period. Move ahead on the Instructor Interview Project so that you can be ready to make a presentation by November 13th, Week 8. This gives you about 16 school days to complete.
