Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing helps you make connections with prior knowledge, demonstrate comprehension, and remember what you have read. Remember, if you cannot paraphrase after reading, you need to go back and reread to get the things you didn’t understand. A summary is different from a paraphrase because it's purpose is different; a summary is always shorter than the original and is a way of condensing the main point and supporting details. A paraphrase puts the author's words into your own words to help you understand the meaning of the excerpt you are paraphrasing. Sometimes a paraphrase is longer than the original piece.
A common mistake writers make when paraphrasing is to simply substitute synonyms into the original work. Remember that you must alter sentence structure as well; don't simply replace words.
